Welcome

Who are we?

Wood is our thing, it’s what we know and love and quality has always been a way of life for us. We are brothers Steve and Phil and we bridge the gap between you - the creative woodworker and the best bits of wood that really inspire you.

'We make it easy for you to get hold of top quality wood blanks for your project.'

If you are a woodturner, carver, sculptor, pyrographer (wood burner) knife maker, luthier or general wood worker, we know how important it is to have easy access to the right materials at good prices.

Its not just about the wood though, really its all about people. If you’re like us, you love having easy access to the things you need via the web but hate being treated like a number. We’ve taken the best the web can offer, re-introduced old school values like approachability & politeness and made wood accessible to everyone everywhere.

A love for wood & trees

Steve and Phil come from a family of makers and they have both always loved wood and trees. In 2010 Steve was pursuing his love of woodwork whilst farming on Exmoor. His location gave him access to a wide range of English wood species and over time he realised that this normality was far from the case for many woodworkers.

Woodworking produces lots of off cuts and Steve was increasingly reluctant to allow them to end up on the wood burner.  In an attempt to stop them going waste, and in the spirit of 'nothing ventured, nothing gained' he listed a few choice pieces on eBay.

A wide range of possibilities

It was obvious from the word ‘go’ that there was a real demand for small quantities of interesting wood blanks and Steve became one of the very first on eBay to sell woodturning blanks. From wrapping parcels on the farm house kitchen table, then converting one of the lambing barns to a makeshift packing room he eventually graduated to a large barn on a friends farm. Timber and trees were bought from local landowners and fellow woodworking friends who had surplus stocks, relationships with suppliers began to grow.

There is only so much you can do on your own though. Cue Phil. Cut from the same cloth Phil has been a professional craftsman almost of all his working life and like Steve understands how important it is to have easy access to the right materials at good prices. With experience in marketing and a taste for the internet, a new partnership was formed which opened up a wide range of possibilities.

2017 - English Woods was born
